Faraday Box

Most people never heard of a Faraday Box, but it could be an important asset should our country be hit by a natural (strong solar flares) or man-made electromagnetic pulse (EMP).

Experts agree one or two nuclear devices, detonated 100 to 300 miles above the USA, would produce an EMP that will “fry” every electrical device in the country. Everything that contains a microcircuit, including all cars made after about 1980, and including our country’s electrical grid, will be damaged beyond easy repair.

No cars (unless they’re antiques), no refrigeration, no heat and air conditioning, definitely no TV or Internet or phone service (no cell, no land line), NO ELECTRICITY for months or even several years. Most generators have microprocessors in them now, so they won’t work either, even if you could find fuel (which you can’t…delivery trucks will stop running too).

metal garbage canA Faraday Box is a simple container, the contents of which can withstand an EMP. It’s just a metal container, like a galvanized steel garbage can, lined inside with non-conductive material (cardboard) so items in the container can’t touch the metal box.

It’s a good place to store a shortwave radio and batteries so you can get news from overseas about what’s going on. It’s a great place to store spare circuit boards for important things like your generator. A place to store a laptop or tablet computer with books and reference materials, because without the Internet, you’ll be limited to what you have stored in that box!

Just be sure to use METAL duct tape (the real tape heat and air professionals use to seal duct work) to seal the crack where the lid meets the body of the can. Believe it or not, if you don’t seal that gap with metal tape, your Faraday box won’t work.

Just search the Internet for how to make one. Here’s an example:
